Rhubarb Bakewell and musings

My friend B gave me some rhubarb last week after I told her that ours had disappeared in the garden. I made a rhubarb jam with orange and ginger and then turned it into a Bakewell tart of sorts. The cakey topping is a sponge mixture of half wholemeal and cornmeal with vanilla. Burnt the edges a bit, but it was very very nice.

The Food Technology GCSE exam was this last Friday afternoon. That morning I turned around to see quite an eclectic gaggle of year 11 pupils coming through the classroom door. It was lovely to see them to be honest. Why they aren't in class is a bit too complicated to explain, but mainly it's their decision at this stage. We had a gossip, they asked questions about bread, yeast, labeling requirements and food temperature danger zones. One of the girls made an observation about tv soap operas. On the Australian shows there is always fruit on the tables and they are forever having bbq's and nipping into the juice bar for a smoothie. While on the UK soaps one see is bacon sarnies, fish and chips and bottles of ketchup sitting out on the tables (even if they are not eating!). What does it say about us? Just an observation.

Been watching Glastonbury on the telly, the only way to do it, even if it's just down the road from us. Highlights, and you must try to check it out on the ole' you tube if you haven't seen them yet, Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Pop and Shirley Bassey. WOW. Life affirming the lot of them.

tattoo baby and GCSE results

Oh, this was fun. I bought cheap baby sleep suits for the boy and then customised them. This one I call tattoo boy.

GCSE results: disappointing as I thought. The three kiddies that I had hoped would get B's didn't.Three of my most challenging pupils, who had targets of C's, actually got G's and F's. Flippin' heck can't I get a break here? Not a good way to start the next school year. This session I will only have GCSE in the food dept. and the rest of my time will be spent teaching my tutor group (30 eleven year olds) everything else but food.
I'm spending this week mentally preparing for this by visiting friends and eating a lot of chocolate. Good plan don't ya think?
