shortbread and birthdays

Let's just get this out of the way. My mother-in-law has sent, as a Christmas present, 13 boxes of Scottish shortbread cookies in various forms.  It's quite overwhelming and the negative is that there is no real need to do any Christmas baking... for a very long while. So the gingerbread dough stays in the freezer for the while.

But we ARE going to make more birthday cake tomorrow. The Girl will be 10 tomorrow! It feels so significant. And it is, isn't it?  5 years ago I decided that actual birthday parties would only occur every 5 years, for sanity's sake.  So it had to count.  We organised it for yesterday. I can highly recommend the climbing centre. The girls had a great time.
