Ode to pigeons

My neighbour, a lovely man, has been racing pigeons all of his life. It is a traditional past time in these parts, connected with the mining history of the south part of the town. The sad thing is that he has not been racing them this year or even letting them out to practice and exercise. It's because he is concerned with the possiblility of bird flu. A shame for him and his birds. And us, we like watching them fly around and sitting on our roof looking down at us. A symbol of modern worries.
